User Reviews about Char-Griller 1515 Patio Pro Model Grill
We love this little grill - it's the perfect size for two, but stays so hot it easily cooks for a crowd. The cast iron grills are fantastic to cook on, and the removable ash pan makes clean up quick and easy. My husband put it together in no time, and we installed a thermometer from River Country (bought on Amazon), which is really the only thing it lacks. The custom fit grill cover looks sweet, too. -- Great little grill
I purchased this grill a few days ago after I saw it on display in a box at a retail store. This grill is built to last, and what I mean by that, is that the materials (steel, etc.) are going to endure both the elements, as well as any rough handling. I also did some research on the manufacturers, and from what I've seen, they make only HIGH QUALITY products. This is just one of their lil babies, next to their other portable grill, which has the same size cooking area, and can be carried around easily.
The only fault I see with this grill is that the instructions and illustrations leave too much room for guess work. I'm sure these folks make enough money to put a better manual together, or, better yet, an online video demo for each grill. C'mon people this is 2010 already, utilize the technology!!
As mentioned before, there are (3) lock-washers for this grill. One goes on each of the damper vents (there are two), and the other one goes on the latch to keep the drawer from opening.
The bottom rack should be assembled after you've put both legs together. Once that's done, then place the rack on top and line up the downward hooks of the rack with the holes in the legs, now stand the legs up (very important step).
The little black hooks (they look like question marks), can be hand-screwed into the wood panels for the side-rack, they've made starter holes on the bottom of these already so they go in easily.
Finally, that heavy lil black thing (made of cast-iron too) that looks sorta like an "S" with the strap on it, that's for picking up the cast-iron grates when they are hot.
Additionally, the drawer grate, as pointed out, suprisingly, in the illustration, is for woodchips only. So, I'm assuming that you place the charcoals in the drawer itself, and use the grate only when you want to add woodchips. I'd would suggest lining the drawer with heavy-duty alluminum foil (before each use) to add to it's longevity.
-- Compact 'N' Rugged!!!!
This is a very well built grill!!! The metal is much thicker than others that I checked out at the home improvement stores, and the lid is not overly heavy either.
From the other reviews I was expecting the assembly to be a bit of a challenge. The instructions are a little vague but just use some common sense when putting it together. Took me less than an hour. Just make sure you have pliers or an adjustable wrench to tighten all the bolts. You might want to buy a temp gauge also.
Also BEFORE you start to put this grill together start the seasoning process of the cast grilling surfaces. This take s a couple of hours. I was ready to grill after assembly but then was set back a few hours for the cast seasoning.
Overall this is an awesome grill! I am new to the Char-Griller brand and so far I am very impressed with the quality! -- Perfect size for smaller patio!
I love this grill, its been great to me! But, it is a little over priced here. If you live in the South or even some parts of the Midwest you can get this grill at Academy Sports and Outdoors for $59.99 and they will even assemble it for you if you'd like. Unfortunately they don't ship, so if you don't have a store near you this is the best deal on this grill. -- over priced here
My wife and I were looking for a new grill this summer. Firstly, I was committed to charcoal. So, I thought I'd get another Weber. After reading enough favorable reviews of the Char-Griller Patio Pro, I had to go have a look. From a usability and "design" perspective, it absolutely slays the Weber. How annoying is it to have to set your lid AND grate on the ground in order to get a fire going?
Now, before I anger all the Weber-faithful, let me say, Weber makes THE BEST charcoal chimney starter available. Buy one with your Char-Griller and NO OTHER. Fill one with ALL NATURAL LUMP charcoal, stuff a sheet of newspaper underneath, light it and walk away. By the time you've prepped your food, the coals are ready to be dumped, for cooking
Assembly is a pain, but frankly, a good exercise in problem-solving while working with your hands. I encourage you to take the extra expense/effort to polyurethane all the wood, and you might as well buy a can of high-temp black paint to keep handy for when the factory enamel blisters and peels (not been an issue for me after a summer of use, but still....)
My other upgrades I'm intending include a pizza stone to fit on the grate, a charcoal tub to attach to the lower rack (otherwise, it's pretty useless). And I'd like to figure out a way to mount a thermometer on the lid.
This little furnace is perfect for me and my wife, and if I ever want to upgrade, I'm pretty confident I can bolt the Patio Pro to the side of it's big brother and make it the smoke box! -- Absolutely the best grill I've ever owned - WEBER KILLER!
